District of Elkford Garbage Disposal Bins Survey
We want your feedback on proposed bylaw amendments! The District of Elkford is currently working on developing a solution for the wildlife issues occurring with commercial garbage collection. Unfortunately, once a food source is taken away, wildlife typically seeks out another food source nearby; so, we are also considering how this will impact residential curbside collection.
Note that any changes made to garbage collection—commercial or residential—are required to be part of a bylaw amendment adopted by council, which follows a process that requires public advertisement and allows the community opportunities to provide feedback and ask questions to council.
On September 23, 2024, council asked staff to survey commercial users regarding a proposed hybrid garbage collection model that would allow collection for users that do not have wildlife issues *and* require those that are unable to keep their bins wildlife-free to switch to steel, locking bins. Our hope is that this proposed option provides the most flexibility to Elkford’s business community.
For commercial clients in Elkford, changes made to commercial garbage collection to mitigate wildlife issues may also come with financial impacts. This is something that the District does not take lightly, and all aspects of this issue are being discussed in-depth during regular council meetings that are open to the public. Find the regular council meeting schedule here: www.elkford.ca/town-hall/events.
With proposed changes to commercial garbage collection, we must also plan ahead to mitigate wildlife issues for our residential customers. The consideration we are taking with residential collection is to advance the process of rolling out wildlife-resistant bins to all residential customers during the 2025 budget year. The rollout will occur in conjunction with a user-fee increase, required to offset the cost of replacing bins.
We want your feedback on these proposed bylaw amendments! Complete the survey before the deadline on December 13, 2024. (Note that although we’re looking forward to hearing your input, feedback provided through Facebook will not be accepted.)
Be advised that feedback provided in this survey is being used for informational purposes only. The information collected is to help inform and guide the decision-making process, and it will not equate to a final decision made by the customer or be used to enforce bylaw violations. Note, as well, that we will ask for your collection address to help us map out responses; however, all responses will be redacted to remove any identifiable information before being presented to council.
